Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
