Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
